Elk Characteristics

Elk:

  • inhabit portions of Elk, Cameron, Clinton, Clearfield, and Potter Counties, Pennsylvania, and are found on several Elk Hunting Preserves in and around PA;
  • Bulls can run up to 40 mph, are extremely agile and excellent swimmers, and are most active in the morning and evening;
  • antlers can grow up to an inch a day and become larger and more complex every year. However, the actual size of the rack is also a factor of genetics and nutrition;
  • are reddish brown in spring and summer. By late summer, Elk Bulls develop black manes, honey-colored bodies, and buff rumps. In winter, they're sometimes dirty blonde, beige, or off-white; and
